Butte Pasties

Updated: Jan 28, 2023

This is a classic old Irish family recipe passed down by my grandmother! We always heard stories about how her mother would make them for her and her siblings and how much they loved them. I love them, Jamison loves them, and John loves them too!

This is a shortcut recipe. The traditional calls for homemade pie crust, but as a working mom I definitely don't have time to do that! My grandmother always said these were a common lunch, especially for the miners, because they could hold it in one hand and eat it like a sandwich.

Try them out and let me know what you think ☺️

This recipe feeds a family of 4

Ingredients:

1 box premade Pillsburry Pie Crusts

1lb thin or eye of round steaks

3-4 medium russet potatoes

3-4 large carrots ( or a handful of baby carrots)

2tblzp butter

Salt

Parsley

Montreal steak seasoning

Worcestershire

Directions:

  1. Set out pie dough and preheat oven to 425

  2. Heavily season steaks with Montreal steak seasoning & a dash of Worcestershire

  3. Peel & Chop Potatoes into bite size pieces, set aside in bowl

  4. Chop carrots into small pieces and mix with potatoes

  5. Season potatoes & carrots heavily with salt & parsley.

  6. Cook steaks & then chop into bite size pieces and mix with carrots and potatoes

  7. Roll out pre-made pie dough and cut each in half so that you have a total of 4 small pie dough triangles.

  8. Fill each half of each pie dough with the mixture & dot with butter. Fold the other half of the pie dough over the mixture and press edges together well.

  9. Place pasties on a baking tray and cut 2 small slits in the top of each

  10. Bake for 20-25 min or until pie crust has browned

  11. Top with brown gravy or dip in Durkee sauce or Mayo if you’re a Mayo person

I prefer mine with Durkee & gravy, Jamison prefers his topped with Gravy, & John likes his plain.
